Vacanze in Italy

Our tips to prepare your stay in Rome

Even if all roads lead there, it’s still best not to board the wrong plane or land at the wrong airport!

From all major cities in France (Lille, Nantes, Paris, Lyon, etc.), you can choose between low-cost airlines (Easyjet, Vueling, Ryanair) or regular airlines (Air France, ITA) for a more comfortable flight. You’ll land either at Fiumicino-Leonardo da Vinci Airport (for regular airlines, Easyjet and Vueling) or at Ciampino Airport.

A tip: If you land at Fiumicino, you can immediately enjoy some of our activities like seaside drinks — or even drinks in the sea! So, how do you get to the city center from the airport? Several types of transfers are available, depending on your arrival airport and your budget. From Fiumicino Airport, which is about 30 km southwest of the historic center, you have different shuttle or transport options to reach your accommodation:

1: The Leonardo Express

This is the non-stop express train that connects Rome Fiumicino Airport to Roma Termini, the city’s main station, in just 32 minutes, with departures every 15 minutes. The cost is €14 per person but can go down to €8 depending on time of day. Buy your tickets in advance here (when the website works!). Tickets can also be purchased from vending machines in the terminal or just before the platform entrance. Don’t forget to validate your ticket. Timetable: Trains run from 6:08 AM to 11:27 PM from the airport. (Important: if your flight lands late, check if the metro or buses are still running to get to your hotel.) From Termini to the airport, trains run from 5:20 AM to 10:35 PM. We recommend downloading the CIYMAPPER app, where you’ll find all the options.

2: FL1 Urban Trains

If you’re staying in the western part of Rome, the FL1 trains heading toward Tiburtina station are ideal. Tickets cost €8 — cheaper than the Leonardo Express — and may save you from needing additional metro or bus rides. These trains depart from the same station as the Leonardo Express and take about 50 minutes to reach Tuscolana station. Key stops include Trastevere, Ostiense (Piramide metro), and Roma Tuscolana. Note: They do not stop at Roma Termini. Timetable: Every 15 minutes on weekdays and every 30 minutes on weekends and evenings. Trains run from 5:57 AM to 11:27 PM (Fiumicino > Tiburtina) and from 5:01 AM to 10:01 PM (Tiburtina > Fiumicino).

3: Authorized Taxis (Comune di Roma)

These are white taxis with a fixed fare of €55 for a trip from the airport to Rome’s city center, defined as within the Aurelian Walls. If you’re heading outside the walls, the fare will be calculated by meter. The rate covers up to 4 passengers and their luggage. Prices can vary depending on the exact destination, but they are regulated, so no scams if you take official taxis (Comune di Roma). Example: If your hotel is inside the Grande Raccordo Anulare, it will cost less than €70. Be aware of night or Sunday surcharges. Also beware of unlicensed taxis offering random prices and of taxis from the Fiumicino municipality, which are regulated but more expensive. Official taxi booking number: 060609 (if it doesn’t work, add Italy’s country code: +39 060609).

4: Private Taxis

You can book via mobile apps. The price is around €55 depending on your final destination. Uber, though popular in France, is more expensive in Italy. You can also pre-book a car online and be picked up right at the terminal. Be cautious of people approaching you to offer a ride — they operate outside the law and may lack safety measures (and won’t be cheaper). Trusted taxi companies include: Radio Taxi (06 35 70) Samarcanda Taxi (06 55 51) La Capitale (06 49 94) Mondo Taxi (06 88 22)

5: Buses

Several bus companies run the Fiumicino > Termini route in about 55 minutes. This is cheaper than the Leonardo Express or taxis. Tickets cost €5.90 to €7 one way, with discounts for round-trip purchases. Departures every 30 minutes to 1 hour depending on the company. Buy tickets in advance online or on-site before boarding. Buses are easy to find when exiting the terminal — just follow the signs! Sitbus Shuttle: Fiumicino > Vatican > Prati (near Piazza Cavour). Terravision: Terminal 3 Arrivals, Bus Stop 14 | Termini stop: Via Giolitti 38. Rome Airport Bus: Terminal 3 Arrivals, Bus Stop 15 | Termini stop: Via Giolitti 38. Tam Bus: Terminal 3 Arrivals, Bus Stop 13 | Termini stop: Via Giolitti 34. (Also stops at Ostiense, handy if you’re staying in western Rome: Piazza XII Ottobre 1492)

6: Car-sharing Rentals

Car-sharing is a great option for getting from the airport to your hotel or getting around during your stay. Two main providers are:

– ADD SHARENOW

– Enjoyeni: Offers Fiat 500s (4 passengers), great for driving like a local! Download the app, create an account, upload your ID and driver’s license, add a payment card, and you’re set. Enjoyeni operates at both Fiumicino-Leonardo da Vinci and Ciampino airports.

From Ciampino Airport (low cost and private flights) at about 15 km southeast of Rome, you also have several transfer options:

The most affordable way to reach the city center (Termini station) — about 40 minutes. Prices range from €4 to €6 depending on the company. Ciampino is small, so it’s easy to find the buses right outside the terminal. Buy tickets online or on-site before boarding.

– Terravision: Every hour. Termini stop: Via Giolitti 38.

– Rome Airport Bus: Every 30 minutes. Termini stop: Via Giolitti 38.
